PART 3: MOVING FORWARD<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Once the portrait healed, Dustin met with an artist who specialized in complicated cover-ups.<\/p>\n

The artist warned that removing Barbra\u2019s face would require several sessions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care how long it takes,\u201d Dustin said.<\/p>\n

I drove him to every appointment.<\/p>\n

Sometimes we talked. Other times, we sat quietly. The tattoo could be changed with ink, but rebuilding his trust would take much longer.<\/p>\n

Barbra eventually told Stephen\u2019s parents everything.<\/p>\n

They invited Stephen and Dustin to their home and asked Dustin to explain the agreement in his own words.<\/p>\n

Stephen tried to interrupt twice, but his father stopped him.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet your son finish.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Dustin had told the entire story, his grandfather looked at Stephen.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou made your child believe he had to trade part of his body for an education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen attempted to defend himself.<\/p>\n

His mother cut him off.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you promised that boy college tuition, you will honor your promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time, Stephen had to explain his actions in front of the people who had raised him.<\/p>\n

Several days later, he called me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll pay the tuition.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll four years?\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a long pause.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The following week, he paid the university directly and arranged scheduled payments for the remaining years.<\/p>\n

That evening, Dustin sat across from me at the kitchen table.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never would have asked me to do something like that, would you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Months later, Dustin showed me the completed cover-up.<\/p>\n

Barbra\u2019s portrait was gone.<\/p>\n

In its place was a compass surrounded by mountain peaks.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt represents moving forward,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n

As I studied the new tattoo, I realized the portrait had never been the real problem.<\/p>\n

The hardest part was learning how easily Dustin\u2019s own father had convinced him that his education had to be purchased with a piece of his body.<\/p>\n

No parent should ever teach a child that love, approval, or opportunity must be earned through self-sacrifice.<\/p>\n
