With open contempt, Eleanor reached into her handbag and pushed a small envelope across the tablecloth.<\/p>\n

My hands trembled as I opened it.<\/p>\n

Inside was a cashier\u2019s check for $10,000.<\/p>\n

Eventually, I stopped crying and began to think.<\/p>\n

Ryan came home that afternoon. The moment he saw me, he froze in the doorway.<\/p>\n
