Fifteen years after my daughter disappeared from kindergarten, her backpack returned.<\/p>\n

Rain was falling when I noticed the box sitting outside my front door.<\/p>\n

At first, I assumed it had been delivered to the wrong address. My husband, Daniel, said he hadn\u2019t ordered anything. Neither had I. There was no shipping label. No return address.<\/p>\n

It belonged to Caroline.<\/p>\n

I carried it into the house as carefully as if it might crumble in my hands. Daniel kept asking what I had found, but I couldn\u2019t answer. I unzipped the backpack and discovered an envelope, a folded sheet of paper, and nothing else.<\/p>\n

The opening line stole my breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, you won\u2019t believe who took me that day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s face drained of color.<\/p>\n

Around noon that day, Mrs. Hale had called me screaming.<\/p>\n

She told me the children had all been outside at recess, and when they came back inside, Caroline was gone.<\/p>\n

She kept insisting she had only looked away for a moment.<\/p>\n

From that instant on, nothing ever felt normal again.<\/p>\n

By the time I reached the school, police officers had already arrived. They searched the playground, the fence, the church parking lot behind the school, and every classroom twice. Security cameras were scarce back then. The footage they did have showed children, teachers, entrances, and rain-soaked pavement. Nothing that helped.<\/p>\n

Caroline\u2019s cubby still held her sweater, her rabbit-shaped lunchbox, and the red folder she always forgot to take home.<\/p>\n

Everything remained except her backpack.<\/p>\n

I repeated the same thing to every officer.<\/p>\n
