PART 3: TWENTY YEARS OF TRUTH<\/strong><\/h1>\n

After Richard died, his former employer reopened the investigation.<\/p>\n

Dylan handed me a settlement document proving the company had recovered much of the stolen money from accounts Richard had hidden under false names.<\/p>\n

Every record inside the lockbox had been authenticated.<\/p>\n

Richard\u2019s fraud had finally been exposed.<\/p>\n

I stared at the documents, barely able to breathe.<\/p>\n

For twenty years, I had trusted the wrong person.<\/p>\n

Richard had not only stolen from his company.<\/p>\n

He had stolen two decades from Dylan and me.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo everyone knows you were innocent?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Dylan nodded.<\/p>\n

Then he reached into the bottom of the black box and removed several velvet pouches.<\/p>\n

Inside were my grandmother\u2019s pearl earrings, my mother\u2019s wedding ring, the gold bracelet, and every missing necklace.<\/p>\n

Everything was polished and carefully preserved.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could never sell them,\u201d Dylan said. \u201cThey belonged to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pressed my mother\u2019s ring against my chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I would never see these again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI promised myself I would return them when it was finally safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Dylan pulled a faded piece of paper from his wallet.<\/p>\n

It was the chocolate chip cookie recipe I had written for him when he was a child. The corners were worn nearly white.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou kept this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt isn\u2019t even a very good recipe.\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled.<\/p>\n

I stood and wrapped my arms around him.<\/p>\n

He held me as tightly as he had the night before leaving for college.<\/p>\n

That evening, pizza baked in the oven while chocolate chip cookies cooled on the counter.<\/p>\n

Dylan picked one up and smiled.<\/p>\n

For the first time in years, the house no longer felt empty.<\/p>\n

As he carried two plates toward the table, I realized the most valuable thing he had returned was not my jewelry.<\/p>\n
