PART 2: RECLAIMING THE FAMILY STORY<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I asked Lily to keep her instant photographs safe and returned to the rental house.<\/p>\n

Once inside my room, I called Rachel.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you still preparing Michael\u2019s slideshow?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. Why?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause Ashley has been choosing the family photographs very carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rachel became silent.<\/p>\n

Then she admitted that she had already noticed something strange.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are hardly any pictures of you,\u201d she said. \u201cAshley told me you preferred privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI never said that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand that now.\u201d<\/p>\n

I told Rachel everything: the cropped photographs, Ashley\u2019s remark about immediate family, Michael\u2019s silence, and what Lily had discovered.<\/p>\n

Rachel was furious.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not using Ashley\u2019s version,\u201d she said firmly.<\/p>\n

That evening, we opened the family archive Michael had collected over the years and began selecting photographs that showed the truth.<\/p>\n

There was Michael at eight years old, smiling beside me at a school fair.<\/p>\n

There was Michael in his first apartment while I helped him carry furniture upstairs.<\/p>\n

There was Michael holding newborn Lily against his chest as I stood nearby with coffee.<\/p>\n

We also included Ashley.<\/p>\n

There were photographs of her laughing in my kitchen while I taught her my mother\u2019s stuffing recipe and wearing a ridiculous reindeer headband at Christmas.<\/p>\n

Rachel paused when she noticed I had chosen those pictures.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re including Ashley?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course,\u201d I said. \u201cShe belongs in the family story. She simply does not have the right to remove me from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rachel requested more photographs from the extended family, and within minutes, Ashley called me.<\/p>\n

I did not answer.<\/p>\n

Then Michael called.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, Rachel says she needs different pictures. What happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI showed your sister the family history your wife was trying to rewrite.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Before he could respond, Lily\u2019s voice interrupted from his side.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means Mom kept removing Grandma from everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael tried to send her away, but Lily refused.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou saw what happened at the beach,\u201d she told him.<\/p>\n

That evening, Michael came to my room alone.<\/p>\n

He admitted he had seen Ashley crop the photograph. He claimed he thought she was merely being rude and had not known about the slideshow.<\/p>\n

\u201cI should have stopped her,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, you should have.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to cause a scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is often an excuse used by people who are afraid to stand up for someone,\u201d I replied. \u201cI raised you to have more courage than that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked ashamed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do I fix this?\u201d<\/p>\n

I studied him for a long moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cDecide what you are willing to do when you are standing in front of everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The following afternoon, Rachel called again.<\/p>\n

Ashley had discovered the slideshow had been changed and argued that Michael\u2019s work celebration was not the place for \u201cfamily politics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael initially told Rachel to keep the presentation neutral.<\/p>\n

My heart sank when I heard that.<\/p>\n

Then Lily challenged him.<\/p>\n

She asked whether \u201cneutral\u201d meant watching someone erase his mother and refusing to intervene.<\/p>\n

Ten minutes later, Michael called Rachel back.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeave the slideshow exactly as it is,\u201d he told her.<\/p>\n

For the rest of the beach trip, Ashley behaved with exaggerated politeness. She suddenly invited me into pictures and offered to make coffee in the morning.<\/p>\n

But courtesy after being exposed was not the same as an apology.<\/p>\n
