In September, my granddaughter Maya contacted me.<\/p>\n

Grandma, are you really on a boat? Are you coming back?<\/p>\n

I told her I would return in the spring and asked whether she wanted postcards from every place I visited.<\/p>\n

She said yes.<\/p>\n

Over the following months, I mailed her forty-one postcards.<\/p>\n

The first real change came from Chloe.<\/p>\n

She sent me a photograph of Maya\u2019s report card and explained that Maya had become more independent since she returned to work.<\/p>\n
