When we stepped inside, I removed my shoes beside the door. He loosened his tie and said, \u201cDon\u2019t spend all night working yourself up over this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood,\u201d he said, and walked straight to bed.<\/p>\n

I remained standing in the dark for a moment.<\/p>\n

Then I went into the kitchen, opened my laptop, and pulled up our joint accounts, mortgage records, utility bills, and everything else I would need if the relationship was truly ending. Somewhere between the savings account and the homeowners insurance documents, I remembered Christmas at his parents\u2019 house.<\/p>\n

Elaine had taken me aside while everyone else argued over a board game in the living room. She touched my arm gently and said, \u201cI hope that when you\u2019re ready, you\u2019ll give David the chance to make things official. He loves you very much.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, I smiled and assumed she was being old-fashioned. Sitting alone at the kitchen table, I realized she had not been guessing.<\/p>\n

She had been repeating something she had been told.<\/p>\n

I called her.<\/p>\n

She answered after four rings, her voice heavy with sleep.<\/p>\n

\u201cSarah? Is everything okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to ask you something,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd I need you to answer honestly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence followed.<\/p>\n

Then she said, \u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n

I told her what David had said during dinner, repeating his exact words. When I finished, she remained silent for so long that I wondered whether the call had disconnected.<\/p>\n

Then she spoke very quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told us you were the one who didn\u2019t want to get married.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shut my eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said marriage made you anxious. He said he didn\u2019t want to pressure you. He said he was waiting until you were ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

A memory returned instantly, sharp and humiliating. Two Thanksgivings earlier, David\u2019s sister had squeezed my hand and said, \u201cYou\u2019re lucky he\u2019s so patient.\u201d I had laughed because I had no idea what she meant.<\/p>\n

My fingers tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n

Elaine released a shaky breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, David.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she revealed something worse.<\/p>\n

Three years earlier, David had asked her for his grandmother\u2019s ring. He claimed he intended to propose during our trip to Maine that autumn. Elaine had the ring cleaned and appraised before handing it to him. She still had the receipt and a photograph she had sent her sister because she had been so excited.<\/p>\n

The proposal never happened.<\/p>\n

Whenever Elaine asked why, David told her I had panicked and begged him to wait. He claimed he was honoring my wishes. He repeated that explanation until everyone accepted it as truth.<\/p>\n

I pressed my free hand against the table to steady myself.<\/p>\n

Elaine said, \u201cI\u2019m coming over.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n

She arrived before the sun came up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want it back from him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

When David wandered into the kitchen wearing sweatpants and looking half asleep, he froze in the doorway.<\/p>\n

Elaine looked up at him.<\/p>\n

He stared first at her, then at me, and finally at the documents spread across the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n

Elaine raised the receipt. \u201cIt\u2019s proof that I gave you your grandmother\u2019s ring.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression hardened. \u201cThis is private.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Elaine said. \u201cIt stopped being private when you used her as your excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned toward me. \u201cYou called my mother in the middle of the night?\u201d<\/p>\n

I asked, \u201cWhere is the ring, David?\u201d<\/p>\n

He gave a strained laugh. \u201cThis is ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBring it here,\u201d Elaine said.<\/p>\n
