PART 1: THE DINNER<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The night before my mother was supposed to meet my future mother-in-law, she placed her nicest dress across the bed and carefully smoothed every crease.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think Clarissa will like me?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

I smiled and told her the truth.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re impossible not to love.\u201d<\/p>\n

She smiled back, but I could see how nervous she was.<\/p>\n

Clarissa had insisted that their first meeting take place at one of the most expensive restaurants downtown. My mother had offered to host dinner at her house, where the atmosphere would be warmer and more comfortable, but Clarissa refused.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said the restaurant would be neutral ground,\u201d I explained.<\/p>\n

My mother quietly accepted the decision. She was the kind of person who avoided conflict, even when staying silent hurt her.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, I was the same way.<\/p>\n

On the morning of the dinner, I woke up with a pounding headache and a high fever. When my mother touched my forehead, she immediately told me I was staying home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to go,\u201d I argued. \u201cClarissa will be offended if we cancel.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can barely stand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eventually, I convinced my mother to attend without me. She hesitated at the front door, clutching her purse tightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to look so out of place,\u201d she whispered. \u201cClarissa and her family live in a completely different world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou belong anywhere you walk into,\u201d I assured her.<\/p>\n

She kissed my forehead and left.<\/p>\n

As soon as the door closed, uneasiness settled over me.<\/p>\n

I already knew how Clarissa behaved around food. For more than a year, she and her sisters, Beatrice and Evelyn, had attended nearly every dinner my fianc\u00e9 and I hosted. They never brought anything, ate enormous portions, and often left carrying containers of leftovers.<\/p>\n

Whenever I complained, my fianc\u00e9 defended them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s just how my family is,\u201d he would say. \u201cMom means well.\u201d<\/p>\n

So I stayed quiet.<\/p>\n

That evening, Clarissa arrived at the restaurant with both sisters beside her.<\/p>\n

The waiter had barely passed out the menus when Clarissa began ordering lobster, premium steak, expensive appetizers, wine, and signature cocktails.<\/p>\n

My mother looked at the prices and quietly ordered a salad.<\/p>\n

\u201cA salad?\u201d Beatrice laughed. \u201cThis is supposed to be a celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m on a budget,\u201d my mother admitted.<\/p>\n

The three women ignored her discomfort and continued ordering. For nearly two hours, they ate while my mother sipped water and tried to make polite conversation.<\/p>\n

When the table was finally cleared, Clarissa called for the check.<\/p>\n

\u201cBring it to her,\u201d she instructed, pointing at my mother.<\/p>\n

My mother stared at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Clarissa smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s tradition. The bride\u2019s mother pays when the families meet for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother had never heard of such a tradition. She explained that she could not afford the entire meal, especially when she had ordered only a salad.<\/p>\n

Clarissa\u2019s expression turned cold.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you didn\u2019t understand the tradition, that\u2019s your problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bill was more than $1,700.<\/p>\n

My mother\u2019s face burned with embarrassment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have that kind of money,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot my concern,\u201d Clarissa replied.<\/p>\n

Then she and her sisters stood, put on their coats, and walked out of the restaurant laughing.<\/p>\n

They left my mother alone with the bill.<\/p>\n
