PART 2: THE INVOICE<\/strong><\/h1>\n

My phone rang shortly afterward.<\/p>\n

My mother was crying.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey left,\u201d she said. \u201cThey ordered everything and left me with the bill. The manager is standing here, and I don\u2019t know what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something inside me changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t sign anything,\u201d I told her. \u201cI\u2019m coming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite my fever, I drove downtown.<\/p>\n

When I entered the restaurant, my mother was sitting alone at the table with her hands folded in her lap. She looked like a child who had been punished for something she had not done.<\/p>\n

The manager approached with the receipt.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll pay it,\u201d I said, handing him my card.<\/p>\n

As I signed, the waiter quietly came over.<\/p>\n

They always arrived empty-handed, ate more than anyone else, and left with leftovers.<\/p>\n

By the time I reached home, I had a plan.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I asked my fianc\u00e9 whether Clarissa was still hosting her garden club luncheon.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d he replied cautiously. \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

That afternoon, I ordered several cheap meals from a greasy diner. Then I placed the containers inside an elegant white catering box tied with a gold ribbon.<\/p>\n

Underneath the food, I added a folder.<\/p>\n

Inside, I listed every meal Clarissa and her sisters had enjoyed at our home during the previous three years.<\/p>\n

Page after page detailed every holiday, party, and family gathering.<\/p>\n

The final total read:<\/p>\n

Estimated Hospitality Received Over Three Years: $2,486.<\/p>\n

Behind the invoice, I attached a copy of the restaurant receipt. I circled the $1,700 total and highlighted my mother\u2019s single salad.<\/p>\n

I also included family photographs.<\/p>\n

In one, Clarissa was smiling with a third serving of lasagna.<\/p>\n

In another, Beatrice was packing leftovers before dessert had even been served.<\/p>\n

Evelyn appeared in a Thanksgiving picture leaving our house with two boxes of pie.<\/p>\n

Under each photograph, I added a simple caption.<\/p>\n

\u201cThird helping.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBrought nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTook leftovers home.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the outside, the package looked like expensive catering. Clarissa would proudly open it in front of all her friends.<\/p>\n
