\u201cThis is crazy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I shook my head. \u201cNo. Crazy is using your mother to search my bedroom because you were afraid I\u2019d find out about your debt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kathryn turned sharply toward him. \u201cYou told me she was hiding money.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou said you were worried,\u201d I said. \u201cYou told her to check the desk, the dresser, the back drawers. That\u2019s just Mom, right? That was your answer until I proved she was doing exactly what you asked.\u201d<\/p>\n

Austin\u2019s expression tightened. \u201cYou had no right to go through my messages.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou mean the messages on the family tablet you leave open on the kitchen counter? The same way you thought your mother had every right to go through my drawers?\u201d<\/p>\n

He had no response.<\/p>\n

Kathryn glanced between us, suddenly unsure of herself.<\/p>\n

Her lips pressed together. She understood that was true.<\/p>\n

Kathryn hesitated before reaching into her handbag and dropping the spare key into my palm.<\/p>\n

Losing access seemed to wound her more than being exposed. It was not getting caught that upset her most. It was being shut out.<\/p>\n

Austin looked between his mother and me. \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n

It was the first sincere question either of them had asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want you both out of my bedroom,\u201d I said. \u201cThen I want you gone for the day while I call my lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n
