Mark smiled, leaned closer, and helped her slice the cake.<\/p>\n

Back in the surgical wing, Emily accepted the pen with numb fingers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I sign,\u201d she said, \u201cthey live?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will do everything possible,\u201d Dr. Patel answered.<\/p>\n

Emily signed.<\/p>\n

The operation began beneath harsh white lights. Emily caught scattered words above her: \u201cpressure dropping,\u201d \u201cmore suction,\u201d \u201cBaby A out,\u201d \u201cNICU ready,\u201d \u201cshe\u2019s bleeding too fast.\u201d To keep herself conscious, she repeated the names she had chosen alone: Grace. Lily. Hope.<\/p>\n

Then came the first cry.<\/p>\n

Thin, angry, alive.<\/p>\n

A second cry followed.<\/p>\n

Then nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cBaby C?\u201d Emily gasped.<\/p>\n

Her sight clouded. She imagined Mark rushing through the doors, frightened, remorseful, finally choosing her. Instead, a nurse tightened her hand around Emily\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Hours later, Mark returned to the hospital carrying the faint scent of frosting and Madison\u2019s perfume. During the elevator ride, he prepared his excuses. Emily was overly dramatic. Hospitals always made things sound worse. He would claim his battery had died.<\/p>\n

But the maternity room was empty.<\/p>\n

The bed had been stripped. Flowers from his office remained untouched on the windowsill. There was no wife and no babies.<\/p>\n

A nurse walked past carrying charts. Mark caught her sleeve.<\/p>\n
