Mark looked at the nurse as though she had spoken a language he could not understand.<\/p>\n

\u201cFour days ago?\u201d he repeated. \u201cThat\u2019s impossible. She had surgery today.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nurse carefully pulled her sleeve free. \u201cSir, the emergency C-section was last Thursday. Today is Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark remained frozen for several seconds. The country club dining room, Madison\u2019s red dress, the cake, the champagne, and the unread notifications suddenly locked together. Thursday had not been a single missed afternoon. He had disappeared for four full days.<\/p>\n

He had spent them at Madison\u2019s lake house, convincing himself Emily was sending dramatic messages to punish him. He had shut off his phone and eventually left it inside his car. When he powered it on that morning, the screen had filled with messages from unfamiliar numbers, hospital extensions, and one from Emily\u2019s sister, Claire: If you have even one human bone in your body, come now.<\/p>\n

He had deleted it without reading the others.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere are my daughters?\u201d he demanded, his voice rising.<\/p>\n

Nurse Lauren, the same woman who had held Emily\u2019s hand during surgery, emerged from behind the desk. Her expression changed the instant she recognized him.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Carter,\u201d she said, with cold professionalism. \u201cTwo of the babies are in the NICU. One was transferred to pediatric cardiology for monitoring. They are stable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen where is my wife?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauren\u2019s jaw tightened. \u201cMrs. Carter discharged herself against medical advice after arranging guardianship paperwork with her sister for the babies\u2019 immediate care. She was not supposed to leave. She had lost a dangerous amount of blood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark swallowed hard. \u201cWhy would you let her?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was conscious. She was legally competent. And she was very clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cClear about what?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauren reached toward a folder but kept it in her hands. \u201cYou\u2019ll need to speak with the hospital administrator and, likely, an attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mention of an attorney struck him harder than expected.<\/p>\n

Mark hurried toward the NICU entrance, but security blocked him. His name had been removed from the approved visitor list. He shouted that he was the father. The guard simply requested identification and instructed him to wait.<\/p>\n

Twenty minutes later, Claire Monroe entered with a diaper bag over one shoulder and the exhausted face of someone who had cried until nothing remained.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou,\u201d Mark said, pointing at her. \u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Claire released a short, bitter laugh. \u201cI answered the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere is Emily?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was your wife when she was bleeding out and asking for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark moved closer. \u201cTell me where she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Claire met his gaze with tired disgust. \u201cNo. You can talk through lawyers now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond the glass, three incubators glowed beneath muted blue lights. Tiny bodies rested under wires and blankets. Grace, Lily, and Hope Carter had entered the world struggling to breathe while their father celebrated with another woman.<\/p>\n

Mark pressed his palm against the glass. For the first time in years, he could not easily find an excuse.<\/p>\n
