I stood in the entryway with my three-month-old daughter, Ava, sleeping against my shoulder when the doorbell rang repeatedly, loud enough to wake her.<\/p>\n

Through the glass, I saw my mother standing on the porch with two suitcases, my younger brother carrying a duffel bag, and a rental van parked crookedly across my driveway.<\/p>\n

\u201cOpen the door, Claire,\u201d Mom called. \u201cWe are not standing out here like strangers.\u201d<\/p>\n

I opened it only halfway. \u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n

The words struck harder than the cold air sweeping inside.<\/p>\n

I had used the life insurance from my husband, Daniel, to buy the small yellow house in Ohio because he had always dreamed of Ava growing up with a yard. Every room still carried the smell of new paint and grief.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my home,\u201d I said. \u201cAva\u2019s home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom rolled her eyes. \u201cPaid for by money from your dead husband, which means it should help the whole family.\u201d<\/p>\n

My brother Tyler walked inside without permission. \u201cMom already picked the downstairs bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stepped in front of the hallway. \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother\u2019s expression changed instantly. The gentle, grieving grandmother disappeared, replaced by the woman who had controlled every home I had ever lived in.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are alone,\u201d she said. \u201cNo job right now. No husband. A baby you can barely handle. If you complain, you can leave. We will raise Ava here properly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ava shifted and whimpered.<\/p>\n

Marlene Brooks stepped out of Daniel\u2019s study. She was the attorney who had helped finalize the purchase that morning. She was sixty, sharp-eyed, and carrying a leather folder packed with signed documents.<\/p>\n

My mother blinked. \u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Marlene looked at the suitcases, then the van, and finally at my mother\u2019s hand still stretched toward Ava.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am the attorney who can explain exactly why this house is not family property,\u201d she said calmly.<\/p>\n
