PART 2 \u2014 THE TRUTH IN THE YELLOW FOLDER<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Grandma lived twenty minutes outside Chicago in a small brick house with blue shutters.<\/p>\n

Daniel drove me there and waited at a nearby coffee shop.<\/p>\n

Grandma opened the door before I could knock.<\/p>\n

She looked unusually serious.<\/p>\n

Inside, the house appeared exactly as I remembered\u2014porcelain birds on the mantel, polished furniture, and family photographs lining the hallway.<\/p>\n

But that morning, I noticed something I had ignored before.<\/p>\n

Most of the photographs featured Vivian at the center.<\/p>\n

I was usually standing behind someone else.<\/p>\n

Grandma followed my gaze.<\/p>\n

\u201cI owe you an apology,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She led me to the kitchen and poured coffee.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told you to keep the peace too many times,\u201d she continued. \u201cI believed you were strong enough to tolerate your mother and sister. But being strong is not a reason for other people to treat you unfairly.\u201d<\/p>\n

I asked why she had called me.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause Thanksgiving was not the first time your mother discussed giving Daniel to Vivian.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two weeks earlier, Mom and Vivian had visited Grandma.<\/p>\n

They claimed I had trapped Daniel because he had a stable career and would make a good husband. Vivian said she had made mistakes but deserved another opportunity to have the life I was building.<\/p>\n

Grandma had told them Daniel was not an object to be reassigned.<\/p>\n

Mom responded that I would eventually agree if the entire family pressured me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey planned everything,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid Dad know?\u201d<\/p>\n

Grandma looked away.<\/p>\n

That was enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe knew they wanted to confront you,\u201d she admitted. \u201cI don\u2019t know whether he expected your mother to lose control.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut he still watched.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

For years, I had thought of my father as the gentle parent because he never shouted.<\/p>\n

Now I understood that silence could also cause harm.<\/p>\n

Grandma placed a yellow folder on the table.<\/p>\n

My name was written on the tab.<\/p>\n

Inside were bank statements, emails, and a letter from an attorney.<\/p>\n

When I was sixteen, my grandfather died and left education funds for each grandchild.<\/p>\n

Vivian used hers for tuition, an apartment, and expenses related to a degree she never completed.<\/p>\n

Mine had been partially withdrawn before I turned eighteen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Grandma explained that Mom had persuaded Dad to access the account by claiming the family faced an emergency.<\/p>\n

Later, Grandma learned that some of the money had paid for Vivian\u2019s pageant coaching and a car lease.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI discovered it afterward. I made them replace part of it, but not all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, I had earned scholarships, taken out loans, and worked two jobs.<\/p>\n

Mom told everyone the missing money did not matter because I was independent.<\/p>\n

\u201cI lived on instant noodles,\u201d I said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t afford some of my textbooks. I thought Grandpa had forgotten me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe never forgot you,\u201d Grandma replied. \u201cHe loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The discovery changed the meaning of my entire childhood.<\/p>\n

Every time I had been told that Vivian needed more, I had been expected to accept less.<\/p>\n

Grandma had already contacted her attorney. She said I might have legal options, but the decision belonged entirely to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you want me to do?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing for me,\u201d she answered. \u201cI\u2019m finally giving you the truth. You decide what happens next.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel was waiting when I returned to the coffee shop.<\/p>\n

After reading the documents, he asked one simple question.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you want to do?\u201d<\/p>\n

No one in my family had asked me that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to delay the wedding,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

His expression became still.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot cancel it,\u201d I explained. \u201cI love you, but I don\u2019t want to enter a marriage while I\u2019m still ignoring everything that happened to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen we\u2019ll delay it.\u201d<\/p>\n

No argument.<\/p>\n

No injured pride.<\/p>\n

Just support.<\/p>\n

The following week, I hired an attorney named Melissa Grant.<\/p>\n

After reviewing the records, she advised sending a formal demand letter.<\/p>\n

Mom called seventeen times when it arrived.<\/p>\n

Vivian accused me of greed and jealousy.<\/p>\n

My father left a voicemail saying the money had belonged to the family and that they had done what was necessary.<\/p>\n

I saved his message.<\/p>\n

Then I sent one email to all three of them.<\/p>\n

From now on, all communication would go through my attorney. I would not discuss Daniel, the wedding, Thanksgiving, or the money without accountability.<\/p>\n

Vivian ignored the boundary and wrote:<\/p>\n

Do you really think Daniel will stay after he sees how cold you are?<\/p>\n

Daniel answered her himself.<\/p>\n

He told Vivian that he loved me for who I was and that her behavior had confirmed he had made the correct choice by never pursuing a relationship with her.<\/p>\n

Then he told her not to contact me again.<\/p>\n

Three months later, the financial matter was settled.<\/p>\n

My parents agreed to repay the missing money with interest.<\/p>\n

My father signed a written statement admitting that the funds had been misused.<\/p>\n

Mom signed only the settlement.<\/p>\n

Vivian claimed she had never known where the money came from.<\/p>\n

I partly believed her.<\/p>\n

Vivian rarely questioned gifts.<\/p>\n

She only expected them to arrive.<\/p>\n
