By spring, my face had healed, but I had not spoken to my mother since Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n

Then she appeared at my workplace.<\/p>\n

I met her in the lobby instead of inviting her upstairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLinda.\u201d<\/p>\n

She flinched.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can be Mom again when you behave like one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she admitted she had tried to make me surrender my future because she believed Vivian deserved it more.<\/p>\n

When I asked about the education money, she became silent again.<\/p>\n

She had convinced herself that I would survive because I always managed.<\/p>\n

That belief had shaped my entire childhood.<\/p>\n

The dependable daughter received less because everyone assumed she would endure it.<\/p>\n
