Fortunately, I had spent most of my life recording important events in a diary.<\/p>\n

After signing the house over, I had written:<\/p>\n

\u201cToday I transferred the house to Emeka to protect it from nursing-home costs. He promised I will live here until I die. He said nothing will change. I trust my son.\u201d<\/p>\n

The entry was dated months before the eviction.<\/p>\n

When Beatrice read it, she became completely still.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis may be the most important evidence we have,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The diary proved what I believed the agreement meant at the exact time I signed it.<\/p>\n

It showed that I had not knowingly surrendered my right to live in the house.<\/p>\n

Beatrice immediately filed to stop the eviction while we challenged the transfer.<\/p>\n

The court allowed me to remain in my home while the case continued.<\/p>\n

Then Emeka fought back.<\/p>\n

Instead of admitting what he had done, he claimed I was confused. He said I had fully understood the documents but was now misremembering them because of my age.<\/p>\n
