Darren spotted her first.<\/p>\n

He stood beside his silver SUV with both hands pressed to his head. Melissa cried behind him while their two boys kicked stones near the back tire. The rented van continued idling, packed to the windows with duffel bags, coolers of groceries, folding chairs, and Ruth\u2019s favorite red suitcase\u2014the enormous one she always brought whenever she intended to stay longer than anyone had invited her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMegan!\u201d Darren shouted up the road. \u201cOpen the gate!\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice traveled between the trees, rough with embarrassment. He had expected an argument at the front door. He had expected to shove his way past her, drop the luggage, claim the bedrooms, and allow Aunt Ruth to control the conversation. He had not expected an iron gate, a deputy, and tow-truck operators already sliding chains beneath the vehicles.<\/p>\n

Megan remained on the porch.<\/p>\n

Deputy Carl Whitman, a broad, square-shouldered man in his fifties, glanced from Ruth to the papers in his hand. \u201cMa\u2019am, you were notified in writing that this is private property. You cannot block the access road.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruth raised her chin. At sixty-six, she still carried the polished severity of a woman accustomed to shrinking others with one look. \u201cThis is a family dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, ma\u2019am,\u201d Whitman said. \u201cThis is a property dispute, and the owner has been clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruth pointed uphill. \u201cShe lived in my house for years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Megan finally descended the porch steps. The mountain air stung her cheeks, yet she felt unexpectedly warm and calm inside. She walked only far enough down the gravel drive for them to see her clearly beyond the locked gate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI rented a basement room from you,\u201d Megan called. \u201cAnd paid more than your mortgage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruth\u2019s expression tightened.<\/p>\n

Darren approached the bars. \u201cYou seriously called the cops on us?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Megan answered. \u201cI called the sheriff\u2019s office last week and told them you might try this. Today, Deputy Whitman responded to a trespass complaint.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa lowered her phone.<\/p>\n

Ruth narrowed her eyes. \u201cAfter everything I sacrificed for you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Megan nearly laughed, but kept her voice steady. \u201cYou charged me eight hundred dollars a month to sleep beside your water heater when I was nineteen. When Grandma left me five thousand dollars, you made me use it to fix your roof. When Darren lost his job, you told everyone I was selfish unless I covered his car payment. When I finally moved out, you told me I would fail.\u201d<\/p>\n

Darren clenched his jaw. \u201cThat\u2019s not what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is exactly what happened,\u201d Megan said.<\/p>\n

One of the tow trucks began pulling Darren\u2019s SUV backward. He turned in panic. \u201cHey! Stop! My laptop\u2019s in there!\u201d<\/p>\n

The driver shrugged. \u201cYou can retrieve personal property at the yard after fees are paid.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFees?\u201d Melissa squeaked.<\/p>\n

Deputy Whitman answered before anyone else. \u201cYou were given ten minutes to move your vehicles. You refused.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruth unfolded the notice again, silently mouthing the words. For the first time Megan could remember, her aunt seemed uncertain where to direct her anger. There was no crowded living room to command, no kitchen table where she could reshape the story, no door Megan could be guilted into opening.<\/p>\n

There was only the gate.<\/p>\n

Only the law.<\/p>\n

Only the woman who had finally stopped purchasing love with money.<\/p>\n

Ruth looked up slowly. \u201cYou will regret humiliating me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Megan rested one palm against the cold iron. \u201cNo, Aunt Ruth. I regretted trusting you. This is different.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first tow truck pulled away with Darren\u2019s SUV. The second began backing toward Melissa\u2019s van.<\/p>\n

Behind Ruth, the children fell silent.<\/p>\n

The adults did too.<\/p>\n

And for once, Megan offered no explanation, apology, or solution for the damage they had caused themselves.<\/p>\n
