PART 1: THE TRIP HE CHOSE OVER HIS FAMILY<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I used to think exhaustion was the hardest part of raising six-month-old twins. Then my husband packed a bag for a four-day fishing trip and left me alone with two crying babies.<\/p>\n

That evening, Lila was screaming against my shoulder while Ivy cried in her bouncer. A pot was nearly boiling dry, dirty bottles covered the counter, and I had not eaten since breakfast.<\/p>\n

Brandon walked in, loosened his tie, and frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could hear them from the driveway,\u201d he complained. \u201cCan\u2019t you do something?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re teething,\u201d I said. \u201cCould you wash the bottles while I settle them?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just got home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019ve been doing this since five this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked around the kitchen as though the mess had personally offended him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re home all day, Amy. I work, and then I come home to chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m also working. I\u2019m caring for two babies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brandon sighed. \u201cI\u2019m done for the day.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nearly laughed. I had slept in forty-minute stretches the night before, yet he believed his responsibilities ended when he walked through the door.<\/p>\n

That was when I noticed the green duffel bag beside the entrance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is your bag packed?\u201d<\/p>\n

He avoided my eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cSimon and Theo are picking me up. We\u2019re going fishing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTonight?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor four days.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him. He had planned an entire vacation without mentioning it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need a break,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou get to stay home.\u201d<\/p>\n

I tightened my hold on Lila.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you arrange for anyone to help me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve handled the girls before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot alone for four days.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re babies. Feed them, change them, and put them to sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen stay tonight and show me how easy it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

A car horn sounded outside. Brandon lifted the bag.<\/p>\n

\u201cI already committed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo your friends,\u201d I replied. \u201cYou committed to them without even speaking to your wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

He opened the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t do this right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I called tomorrow and said I couldn\u2019t manage, would you come home?\u201d<\/p>\n

He hesitated.<\/p>\n

That pause gave me my answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need this trip,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I need a husband.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before leaving, he looked at the crying twins and said, \u201cYou wanted to be a mother, so act like one.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a moment, I could not breathe. We had spent years hoping for children, yet he acted as though the twins were mine alone.<\/p>\n

He waited for me to beg him to stay.<\/p>\n

Instead, I said, \u201cGo. You\u2019ve already chosen.\u201d<\/p>\n

At three in the morning, I sat on the nursery floor with one baby on each side of me and half a granola bar in my hand. Brandon had not called or asked about them once.<\/p>\n

I almost messaged him for help, but deleted the words. I had already asked while he stood beside me. I would not beg now that he had chosen to leave.<\/p>\n

The next morning, he posted a photograph from the lake.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally getting the peace and quiet I deserve,\u201d the caption read.<\/p>\n

I took a screenshot.<\/p>\n

Apparently, Brandon deserved rest, while I deserved whatever was left.<\/p>\n
