The physician instructed me not to put weight on the leg, to keep it elevated, and to rest whenever possible.<\/p>\n

Donald sat next to me throughout the appointment and nodded at every direction.<\/p>\n

For the first two days, he brought me breakfast and coffee.<\/p>\n

On day three, he abandoned his dinner plate beside the sink.<\/p>\n

By the end of that week, he was asking when I would be \u201cback to normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was 40 years old and had spent 12 years remembering appointments, purchasing family presents, and keeping every part of our household running smoothly.<\/p>\n

His grin disappeared when he understood that I was serious.<\/p>\n

His response came without hesitation.<\/p>\n

Donald understood perfectly that working in the kitchen would be exhausting.<\/p>\n

He simply believed that exhaustion belonged to me.<\/p>\n

After arguing for several minutes, he agreed to purchase the main dishes. I agreed to prepare three appetizers and the cake.<\/p>\n

Two days before the celebration, I found him standing at the counter scrolling through his phone.<\/p>\n

Then I pictured them searching our cupboards and asking me what had happened.<\/p>\n

I hated myself for caring.<\/p>\n

He dropped the pot onto the counter so forcefully that sauce splattered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need help plating everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it\u2019s my broken leg.\u201d<\/p>\n

He grabbed a handful of chips and walked away.<\/p>\n

The music outside grew louder.<\/p>\n

\u2014<\/p>\n

During the next hour, guests repeatedly entered the kitchen searching for drinks, napkins, and ice.<\/p>\n

Whenever the door opened, I could see Donald laughing near the pool.<\/p>\n

Not once did I see him look in my direction.<\/p>\n

Then someone outdoors called, \u201cThis food is amazing!\u201d<\/p>\n

Donald laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cTalia insisted on doing everything. You know how she gets when she has a project.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stopped cutting the tomatoes.<\/p>\n

Another guest said, \u201cShe must really love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe loves hosting,\u201d Donald replied. \u201cI couldn\u2019t stop her if I tried.\u201d<\/p>\n

My fingers tightened around the knife.<\/p>\n

He had done more than abandon me with all the work.<\/p>\n

He had rewritten what had happened.<\/p>\n

The kitchen door opened again.<\/p>\n

Misha, the wife of Donald\u2019s longtime friend Theo, stepped inside carrying an empty bucket for ice.<\/p>\n

She surveyed the countertops before looking at my cast.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause the food refused to cook itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

She did not smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cDonald said you wanted to handle everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told people you turned down catering.\u201d<\/p>\n

I could not find an answer.<\/p>\n

Misha placed the bucket on the counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want help?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a guest, Misha. Go have fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo are the other 29 people. None of them are standing on one leg.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can manage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even to me, the lie sounded weak.<\/p>\n

Misha stepped closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to make this look normal for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

My eyes began to sting.<\/p>\n

\u201cCould you carry those trays outside?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before leaving, she rested a hand on my shoulder.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was what made it different.<\/p>\n

Several minutes later, Diane entered with a covered dish and a wrapped present.<\/p>\n

She stopped immediately when she noticed me beside the stove.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you doing, honey?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFinishing the cake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can see that. Why are you doing it alone?\u201d<\/p>\n
