Margaret arrived that Sunday carrying a casserole dish and an expression like winter weather. Daniel trailed two steps behind her with his hands buried in his pockets.<\/p>\n

\u201cMother used to set the table that way,\u201d Margaret said, studying my linen runner. \u201cPatricia. In case you forgot her name.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know your mother, honey. But the runner can come right off if it bothers you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything about this bothers me,\u201d she retorted.<\/p>\n

Garrett cleared his throat from the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cMargaret. That\u2019s enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

She offered him a small, rigid smile but no apology. Daniel refused to look at me.<\/p>\n

\u2014<\/p>\n

The remarks continued week after week.<\/p>\n

She commented that my dress was \u201ca bit much for a woman your age.\u201d She asked whether I\u2019d \u201cever worked a real job.\u201d Once, during dinner, Margaret openly questioned what I expected to inherit.<\/p>\n

\u201cMargaret,\u201d Garrett said quietly, \u201cEleanor isn\u2019t a topic of conversation. She\u2019s my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s your mistake!\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband placed his fork on the table. I had never seen his jaw tighten like that.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will NOT speak to her like that in my house!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014<\/p>\n

Later, I overheard Margaret in the hallway hissing about \u201cMom\u2019s memory\u201d and \u201cthat paperwork you promised.\u201d Garrett answered in a low, controlled voice, but I could not make out his words. I went upstairs and acted as though I had heard nothing.<\/p>\n

Several times that month, I noticed Garrett speaking on the phone in his study with the door partly closed. He was talking to someone named Whitfield. Papers covered his desk, along with a leather folder he quickly put away whenever I entered.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust tidying up some old paperwork,\u201d he told me. \u201cNothing for you to fret about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not fretting. I\u2019m nosy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed and pulled me onto his lap as though we were 20 years old again.<\/p>\n

\u201cEleanor, they\u2019re things I put in place a long time ago. I\u2019m only making sure every line is airtight. You\u2019ll always be safe, no matter what those two think of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I did not ask him to explain.<\/p>\n

I should have.<\/p>\n

But the months drifted by in a soft warmth, winter easing into an uncertain spring, and I allowed myself to believe the storm beyond our bedroom would never cross the threshold.<\/p>\n

\u2014<\/p>\n

It happened on a Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Garrett poured his coffee and reached for the newspaper. Then one hand pressed against his chest. He stared at me in surprise, as if he had suddenly remembered something important.<\/p>\n

And then he was gone.<\/p>\n

A heart attack.<\/p>\n

At the cemetery, the wind sliced through the black dress I wore.<\/p>\n

Margaret stood on the opposite side of the open grave, dry-eyed, looking at me as though I were a mark on clean linen.<\/p>\n

\u2014<\/p>\n

We had been home for less than 10 minutes when my DIL entered the front room holding several stapled pages.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cGet out,\u201d she said, waving the papers at me. \u201cThe house has been in our family trust since before you ever walked through that door. Daddy signed it. Your name isn\u2019t on a single line. You\u2019ve embarrassed our mother\u2019s memory long enough!\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel appeared carrying my old brown suitcase, the same one I had brought the previous winter. Without speaking, he placed it beside my feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease,\u201d I whispered. \u201cAt least let me take his photograph. Just one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Margaret said. \u201cNothing in this house belongs to you. The trust is very clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked toward my son-in-law (SIL).<\/p>\n

He stared at the floor.<\/p>\n

Still dressed in the same black clothes I had worn to bury my husband, I picked up the suitcase and walked through the front door of the second home where I had experienced love.<\/p>\n
