When dozens of forks began disappearing from my kitchen, I assumed my five-year-old son had invented another strange game.<\/p>\n

I never imagined the real explanation would make me question everything I believed about my husband.<\/p>\n

Alex was halfway through his second bowl of cereal when he announced that dinosaurs would make terrible firefighters because their arms were too short to hold a hose.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat does sound like a serious problem,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly!\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed and wiped a streak of syrup from his cheek.<\/p>\n

Motherhood was rarely made of grand, perfect moments. Most days were sticky counters, endless laundry, silly songs, and serious conversations about dinosaurs before nine in the morning.<\/p>\n

I loved those ordinary routines.<\/p>\n

There was Alex at breakfast, chores after lunch, and my husband, Brandon, returning late from the construction site with dust on his clothes and exhaustion in his eyes.<\/p>\n

No matter how tired he was, Brandon always spent the final part of the evening with our son.<\/p>\n

He would kneel beside Alex\u2019s bed and whisper something that made him giggle. Sometimes I stood in the hallway holding folded laundry and listened to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you two planning something without me?\u201d I would call.<\/p>\n

One Tuesday morning, I opened the silverware drawer to get a fork for Alex\u2019s pancakes and found only three.<\/p>\n

We had owned a complete set since our wedding.<\/p>\n

I searched the dishwasher, the trash, the yard, beneath the furniture, and even inside the washing machine.<\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n

That night, I mentioned it to Brandon while he removed his work boots.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost every fork is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed tiredly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlex is five. He probably hid them somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve searched everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen buy another set. They\u2019re only forks, Cece.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something about his response felt unnatural, but Alex was already climbing onto his lap. I decided I was overthinking it.<\/p>\n

I ordered a new box containing forty-eight forks.<\/p>\n

Problem solved\u2014or so I thought.<\/p>\n

Later that night, I heard Brandon carrying Alex toward his room. The bedroom door remained slightly open.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember what I told you,\u201d Brandon whispered. \u201cThis is our thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, Daddy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou promise not to tell?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost stepped inside and asked what they were discussing. Instead, I walked away.<\/p>\n

Parents and children sometimes shared harmless secrets. I did not want to ruin something sweet between them.<\/p>\n

The new forks arrived the following Tuesday.<\/p>\n

I washed them, dried them, and arranged all forty-eight neatly in the drawer.<\/p>\n

By Friday, only seven remained.<\/p>\n

I counted twice.<\/p>\n

Then a third time.<\/p>\n

He entered holding a plastic dinosaur. The instant he saw the open drawer, fear crossed his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you know where the new forks went?\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t be angry. You can tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know, Mommy.\u201d<\/p>\n

His fingers tightened around the dinosaur until his knuckles became pale.<\/p>\n

I called Brandon during his lunch break.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe forks have disappeared again. I bought forty-eight, and now there are seven.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cKids do strange things. Remember when Alex tried to flush his socks?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is different. He looks terrified whenever I ask.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a pause.<\/p>\n

It lasted only a second, but I noticed it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou sound exhausted,\u201d Brandon said. \u201cEat something and rest. We\u2019ll figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t dismiss me as stressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not dismissing you. I\u2019m saying you shouldn\u2019t panic over silverware.\u201d<\/p>\n

I ended the call before my frustration turned into an argument.<\/p>\n

That evening, Brandon stayed in Alex\u2019s room longer than usual. When he came out, he looked strangely cheerful.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat were you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing important. Just boy stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

He kissed my forehead and walked toward the bathroom.<\/p>\n

The following morning, he announced that he had to leave for a two-day warehouse assignment.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince when does your job require travel?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey offered overtime. We need the money.\u201d<\/p>\n

As he packed, he avoided my eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrandon, is something wrong between us?\u201d<\/p>\n

He stopped folding a shirt and pulled me into his arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything is fine. I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

He left before noon.<\/p>\n

That evening, Alex barely ate dinner and asked to go to bed early.<\/p>\n

That alone was unusual.<\/p>\n

When I sat beside him, I noticed that his mattress felt uneven, as though someone had placed pencils beneath the sheet.<\/p>\n

\u201cStand up for a moment, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face filled with panic.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Mommy. Please don\u2019t look.\u201d<\/p>\n

I gently lifted him from the bed and pulled back the sheet.<\/p>\n

Dozens of forks had been arranged underneath it in perfectly straight rows.<\/p>\n

Their silver handles were lined up with care, and every set of tines pointed in the same direction.<\/p>\n

Alex burst into tears.<\/p>\n
