I left the forks beneath the mattress and tucked Alex into bed.<\/p>\n

Then I stepped into the hallway and called Brandon.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are there dozens of forks hidden beneath our son\u2019s mattress?\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence filled the line.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s only a game,\u201d he finally answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of game?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI called it Treasure Knights. The forks are silver swords protecting the castle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why did you make Alex promise not to tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCece, you\u2019re making this bigger than it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You involved our five-year-old son in a secret and repeatedly lied when I asked about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brandon exhaled slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy overtime hours were reduced. I didn\u2019t want you worrying about money, so I invented a game to distract Alex when I came home late.\u201d<\/p>\n

His explanation made no sense.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow long have your hours been reduced?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA few weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many weeks?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe two months. I\u2019m tired, and I have an early shift. Can we discuss this when I return on Sunday?\u201d<\/p>\n

I wanted answers immediately, but there was something desperate in his voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cFine. Sunday. But you are going to tell me everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

After ending the call, I stood alone in the hallway.<\/p>\n

Then I entered our bedroom and searched Brandon\u2019s side of the closet.<\/p>\n

I did not know what I expected to find.<\/p>\n

Behind a stack of jeans, beneath an old shoebox, I discovered a manila folder.<\/p>\n

Inside were overdue bills, credit-card statements, a second phone, and a signed rental agreement for a studio apartment across town.<\/p>\n

My stomach twisted.<\/p>\n

I called my sister, Marion.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Brandon is having an affair.\u201d<\/p>\n

She immediately became alert.<\/p>\n

I told her about the missing forks, the secret game, the second phone, and the apartment.<\/p>\n

\u201cA hidden phone and a secret apartment?\u201d she said. \u201cYou need to speak to a lawyer before confronting him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said his overtime had been reduced.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is exactly the kind of excuse people use when they are hiding something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her words made my fear worse.<\/p>\n

After we ended the call, I sent Brandon a message.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found the phone and the apartment agreement. Don\u2019t come home on Sunday. Don\u2019t come home at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

He called almost immediately.<\/p>\n

For seven years, I had never heard my husband cry.<\/p>\n

But that night, his voice broke.<\/p>\n

\u201cCece, please let me explain in person. It isn\u2019t what you think.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen tell me now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t do this over the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou had plenty of opportunities to tell me the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI love you and Alex more than anything. Please let me come home and explain.\u201d<\/p>\n

I ended the call and slid down the wall.<\/p>\n

For once, I did not try to hide my crying.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, Alex\u2019s bedroom door opened.<\/p>\n

He walked toward me in his dinosaur pajamas, holding a fork like a tiny sword.<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy, why are you sad?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m okay. Go back to bed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, he sat beside me and placed the fork in my lap.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can have one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t need it, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, you do. Daddy said the forks are so you won\u2019t be alone if he has to go away.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did Daddy tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said every fork was a promise. If he couldn\u2019t come home for a long time, the forks would remind us that he was still trying to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alex lowered his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said you were supposed to have some too, but I forgot to give them to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pulled him into my arms.<\/p>\n

Whatever Brandon was hiding, it was not the affair I had imagined.<\/p>\n

I sent him another message.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome home Sunday. We will talk.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the next two days, my mind moved between anger, fear, and confusion.<\/p>\n

Why would Brandon believe he might have to leave us?<\/p>\n

Why had he rented an apartment?<\/p>\n

And why had he asked our son to build a collection of promises beneath his mattress?<\/p>\n
