The boys jumped into the pool while Denise settled into Leo\u2019s chair and began scrolling through her phone.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, Noah climbed onto the shallow step.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, I need to use the bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve watched your children, fed your dog, collected your packages, stored your groceries and checked your house while you were away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did those things because you enjoy helping.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI helped because I cared.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSame difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Denise. It isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

She folded her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe boys wanted to swim.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen you should have asked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou probably would have said no.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I had the right to say no.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mouth tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou and the boys are not allowed to enter my yard again without permission.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re punishing children over a swimming pool.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m holding their mother responsible for bringing them onto someone else\u2019s property.\u201d<\/p>\n
