\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pressed his face near a gap between the boards. Liam stood behind him with his hands in his pockets.<\/p>\n

My chest tightened.<\/p>\n

Two days later, I came home from work and found it lying in the middle of my porch. Beneath it was a folded note.<\/p>\n

Stop being ridiculous.<\/p>\n

I opened the camera footage.<\/p>\n

At 2:06 that afternoon, Denise entered the side passage carrying a power drill. She removed the latch, took off the lock and looked directly into the camera with a satisfied smile.<\/p>\n

I watched the recording once before saving it in three separate places.<\/p>\n

Then I photographed the damaged gate and requested a repair estimate.<\/p>\n

While waiting for the contractor, I checked my messages.<\/p>\n

Denise had sent one earlier that morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe leave Thursday. The boys\u2019 schedule is on the refrigerator. Noah\u2019s medicine is due at noon. Liam has practice at four. The dog food is in the pantry.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was no greeting.<\/p>\n

There was no request.<\/p>\n

She had simply assigned me responsibility for her children, her dog, her packages and her house as though my time belonged to her.<\/p>\n

That evening, I attended the neighborhood cookout. I refused to let Denise\u2019s behavior make me uncomfortable in my own community.<\/p>\n

I was placing a bowl on the food table when I heard her talking on the other side of a hedge.<\/p>\n

One of the women nearby spoke sharply.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s cruel, Denise. Don\u2019t use her affection for your children against her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s true,\u201d Denise replied. \u201cWho else would collect my packages or watch the boys?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stepped around the hedge.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that what I am to you? A free nanny?\u201d<\/p>\n

Denise nearly dropped her drink.<\/p>\n

\u201cMichelle, I didn\u2019t see you there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

For years, I had quietly solved whatever problem Denise created. I had rearranged my schedule, collected forgotten packages, fed her pets and supervised her children without asking for anything in return.<\/p>\n

That ended beside the grill.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou treated my kindness like a service you owned,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n

She lowered her voice.<\/p>\n
