I handed her the box.<\/p>\n

She looked down at the papers.<\/p>\n

Her face lost its color.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t do this now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I can.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe boys need someone to supervise them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen you need to find someone who agreed to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew I had this trip.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou sent me instructions, Denise. You never asked whether I was available.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have important meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen contact the people involved in those meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes shifted toward the boys.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re punishing them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are safely at home with their mother. I am not abandoning anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liam looked toward the floor while Noah hugged a stuffed dog against his chest.<\/p>\n

I kept my voice calm for their sake.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have forty minutes to make another arrangement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Denise pulled the invoices from the box.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou expect me to pay these?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou entered my property without permission, caused the pool to require professional sanitation and damaged my gate. Those expenses are your responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou would take me to court over this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you refuse to pay, I\u2019ll handle it through the appropriate civil process.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stared at the camera image showing her standing beside my gate with the drill.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is all because of that pool?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

I met her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe pool simply showed me what you believed I was.\u201d<\/p>\n

For once, Denise had nothing to say.<\/p>\n

I turned toward the boys.<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of this is your fault.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I walked home.<\/p>\n

Denise postponed her trip.<\/p>\n

Two days later, she approached me while several neighbors were gathered near the sidewalk.<\/p>\n

I stepped forward.<\/p>\n

Denise glanced around nervously.<\/p>\n

She could not.<\/p>\n

Before anyone could bring her sons into the argument, I raised my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe boys are not responsible for their mother\u2019s choices. Leave them out of this. I still care about them very much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three days later, Denise paid the expenses after I formally sent her the recordings, photographs and repair estimates.<\/p>\n

The following Saturday, the pool was clean enough to reopen.<\/p>\n

Noah came to the locked gate with Liam and Josh behind him. He handed me a handmade card with a blue swimming pool drawn across the front and a large heart floating above it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre we still in trouble?\u201d Josh asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I replied. \u201cBut the answer today is still no.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liam nodded.<\/p>\n

That evening, I checked the repaired latch.<\/p>\n

It closed firmly.<\/p>\n
