Grandma Ruth had treated me with more gentleness than anyone else in our family. She taught me how to brew tea correctly, save receipts, refuse to sign under pressure, and recognize who vanishes when love becomes inconvenient.<\/p>\n

My father vanished often.<\/p>\n

When she sold old jewelry to cover his business debt, he called it a loan. When she handed over half her pension for \u201ctemporary help,\u201d he reminded her that family should not keep track of money. After hip surgery left her confined at home, he visited once and complained about the stairs.<\/p>\n
