It was present at every parent-teacher meeting my mother missed, every science fair my father forgot, and every family dinner where Jessica\u2019s college brochures covered the table like a ceremonial carpet.<\/p>\n

Because she was three years older, her wants always came first.<\/p>\n

The only person who truly noticed me was Grandpa Harold.<\/p>\n

He would sit beside me at his kitchen table, pour weak tea into two cups, and tap my notebook with one bent finger.<\/p>\n

By seventeen, I spent weekends working at a bakery, tutored middle school students every Wednesday, and studied until two in the morning. My mother, Linda, would walk past my bedroom late at night without stopping.<\/p>\n

My father, Mark, usually muttered something about the electricity bill.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Jessica drifted through the house with a diamond ring on her finger and a wedding inspiration board larger than my college application essay.<\/p>\n

\u201cRyan wants a winter wedding,\u201d she\u2019d announce over breakfast. \u201cIce sculptures. The whole thing!\u201d<\/p>\n
