More than once that spring, I overheard my parents whispering behind their bedroom door.<\/p>\n

And Jessica\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

I convinced myself I had misunderstood.<\/p>\n

I was only eighteen when the future I had imagined collapsed completely.<\/p>\n

Three weeks before graduation, my college acceptance letter was tucked inside my nightstand. It had been folded twice, its edges softened by how many times I had unfolded and read it.<\/p>\n

Eventually, I placed it on the kitchen counter, hoping someone would notice. Hoping someone would finally say, \u201cWe\u2019re proud of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The letter remained there for the entire evening.<\/p>\n

Untouched.<\/p>\n

From the hallway, I heard my mother speaking quietly through the partially open bedroom door. She said Jessica\u2019s name, then the word fund, followed by something that sounded very much like \u201cShe\u2019ll understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

I did not understand.<\/p>\n

Not then.<\/p>\n

\u2014<\/p>\n

The kitchen light buzzed overhead as it always did, as though it had been designed to accompany bad news. That detail remains clearer than almost anything else: the flickering bulb, the low hum, and the way the light made my mother appear older than she was.<\/p>\n

I sat because my parents told me to.<\/p>\n

My tuition deposit was due the next morning. For one foolish moment, I believed they had finally decided to pay attention to me.<\/p>\n

My mother\u2019s voice was unnaturally calm. My father avoided my eyes, studying a coffee stain on the table as if the answer to everything might be hidden inside it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about it?\u201d I asked. \u201cThe bank appointment is at 9 a.m.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother folded her hands. \u201cWe gave it to your sister.\u201d<\/p>\n

At first, the sentence did not make sense.<\/p>\n

I heard the words, but they seemed to pass straight through me as though she had spoken in another language.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe gave Grandpa Harold\u2019s fund to Jessica,\u201d she repeated, calm as anything. \u201cShe needs a dream wedding. You\u2019re smart; you can figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her, waiting for someone to laugh or explain that it was a cruel joke.<\/p>\n

No one did.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat fund was mine,\u201d I whispered. \u201cGrandpa put it in my name. He said it out loud, in front of everyone, before he died.\u201d<\/p>\n

My father finally spoke without lifting his gaze. \u201cDon\u2019t be selfish, Chloe. It\u2019s her special day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSelfish?\u201d<\/p>\n

A quiet laugh came from the doorway.<\/p>\n

Jessica leaned against the frame with her arms folded, wearing that familiar half-smile. She did not even pretend to feel guilty.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can get loans, right?\u201d Jessica said. \u201cEveryone does.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandpa left that for me because he knew you\u2019d do this,\u201d my voice cracked, and I hated it. \u201cHe knew!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe account was still in my name as custodian when we did it, Chloe. Legally, I had every right.\u201d My mom waved a hand as if brushing lint off the table. \u201cHe was sick when he set it up. He didn\u2019t really know what he was signing. And it was family money in the end, so we made a family decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout me?\u201d I squeaked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019d have said no.\u201d<\/p>\n

I jumped up so quickly that the chair scraped loudly against the floor.<\/p>\n

My hands trembled. Somewhere inside me, something began breaking in silence, like a thin crack spreading across a pane of glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, please! The deposit is tomorrow. I have the acceptance letter. I did everything you asked. I studied, I worked, and I never gave you any trouble!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that\u2019s exactly why we know you\u2019ll be fine,\u201d Mom said, as if she were paying me a compliment.<\/p>\n

Dad cleared his throat. \u201cThe venue was expensive. The flowers alone cost an arm and a leg. Jessica deserves nice things, too, Chloe. You wouldn\u2019t understand yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe deserves MY future?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jessica unfolded her arms. \u201cGod, stop being dramatic. It\u2019s just college. It\u2019ll still be there next year, or the year after.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at all three of them.<\/p>\n

One by one.<\/p>\n

For the first time, I understood completely.<\/p>\n

They felt no regret. They were not even uneasy. They genuinely believed they had done nothing wrong.<\/p>\n
