He skipped visits with our daughter, then posted affectionate photographs whenever he appeared. He mocked my agency publicly, yet I later discovered he had privately asked whether his company could receive spots in one of our parent-return placement programs.<\/p>\n

He wanted the benefit without admitting the work had value.<\/p>\n

For the gala, I wore an emerald gown that I had chosen entirely for myself, without anyone offering cruel advice.<\/p>\n

No one approved the food on my plate either, and I ate exactly what I wanted before leaving home.<\/p>\n

The familiar smirk followed.<\/p>\n

He approached with the same effortless arrogance he had carried throughout our marriage whenever he believed I would surrender first.<\/p>\n

Before I could respond, Marcus returned from the bar. He stepped beside me, rested an arm gently around my waist, and kissed my temple once.<\/p>\n

Liam turned completely white.<\/p>\n

He placed his drink down before it fell from his hand.<\/p>\n

His gaze moved between Marcus and me, and every trace of confidence vanished so quickly that it was almost frightening.<\/p>\n

Marcus remained calm.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood evening, Liam.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liam pointed toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou destroyed my career, and now she\u2019s parading you around like some kind of prize?\u201d<\/p>\n

Marcus replied:<\/p>\n

\u201cYour career continued, just without that promotion you so desperately wanted me to get you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words landed hard.<\/p>\n

Several people nearby became very still. Two board members from Liam\u2019s company exchanged a meaningful glance.<\/p>\n

But Liam could recover quickly when necessary.<\/p>\n

He looked toward them, then back at me, and his panic transformed into calculation.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course,\u201d he said loudly. \u201cThis is personal. She\u2019s my ex-wife. You\u2019re her client. Now suddenly she\u2019s attached to some review process around my company? Does anyone here really not see the conflict?\u201d<\/p>\n

People within hearing distance hesitated.<\/p>\n

The atmosphere changed around us. One board member frowned.<\/p>\n

For half a second, I could almost hear Liam believing he had regained control.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe always let women use family responsibilities as an excuse for weak performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

The same fury I had felt on the night he abandoned me rose inside me again.<\/p>\n

This time, I knew exactly what I wanted to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou said that to me nine weeks after I gave birth. And you\u2019ve been saying versions of it about women ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n

I did not hurry after that.<\/p>\n
