I looked down at the prescription bottle in my lap.<\/p>\n

So did the driver\u2019s license, mobile phone, credit cards, and signed blank checks I had just discovered inside a dusty pink backpack hidden behind the old couch in Nathan\u2019s bedroom.<\/p>\n

Margaret had been missing for several hours.<\/p>\n

Nathan was the last person known to have been with her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m speaking with Celia,\u201d I called through the door.<\/p>\n

Celia was our wedding planner.<\/p>\n

Nathan paused.<\/p>\n

A month later, he found an old copy of the book my father had read to me when I was young.<\/p>\n

Later, while we stood near the coat rack, Margaret touched my arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid Nathan tell you about the paperwork?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wedding contracts?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. The bank documents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could ask what she meant, Nathan appeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t let her involve you in one of her stories,\u201d he said lightly.<\/p>\n

On our drive home, he explained that Margaret became anxious about money and that he helped her manage her bills.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has good days and bad days,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Nathan always sounded reasonable.<\/p>\n

Two days before the wedding, we went to Kristen\u2019s house to collect childhood photographs for the reception.<\/p>\n

Kristen complained that Margaret had called repeatedly about a misplaced bill.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe becomes frightened,\u201d Nathan said. \u201cI handle it.\u201d<\/p>\n

When I asked where Margaret was, he said he had taken her to the bank that morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did she need?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHelp. It\u2019s already handled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he directed me to his old bedroom while he searched the attic.<\/p>\n

My phone slipped behind the couch. When I pulled it away from the wall, I found the dusty backpack.<\/p>\n

Margaret\u2019s license and credit cards were inside. Four numbers had been taped onto the back of one card.<\/p>\n

Beneath them were three signed blank checks and a note in Nathan\u2019s handwriting:<\/p>\n

For bills.<\/p>\n

At the bottom of the bag, I found a letter.<\/p>\n

Nathan, please return my cards. I need to pay for my room. I don\u2019t want to withdraw any more money. Margaret.<\/p>\n

Then I found her medicine.<\/p>\n

The label instructed her to take it at noon, but the bottle was still full.<\/p>\n

I called her number.<\/p>\n

The phone inside the backpack began ringing.<\/p>\n

My concern became fear.<\/p>\n

I contacted her residence. A staff member confirmed that Nathan had signed Margaret out that morning and had never returned her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs she with you?\u201d the woman asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen contact the authorities immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

I took the note and medicine into the bathroom and called for help.<\/p>\n

Before unlocking the door, I photographed everything, returned the backpack to its hiding place, and sent Celia a message.<\/p>\n

Freeze every unpaid wedding expense. Do not tell Nathan.<\/p>\n

Her answer came quickly.<\/p>\n

I trust you. Everything is stopped.<\/p>\n

When I opened the door, Nathan stood beside the couch, studying my face.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look pale.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s wedding stress.\u201d<\/p>\n

He reached toward my purse.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll carry that.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stepped away.<\/p>\n
