Ten minutes later, I was driving through freezing rain, already certain that the situation had been deliberately mishandled.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wrist, shoulder, and side. I think I need medical attention.\u201d<\/p>\n

When I entered the precinct, the officer behind the desk looked up with visible irritation.<\/p>\n

To the State Attorney General\u2019s office, I was special counsel for investigations involving police misconduct and the financial exploitation of older adults.<\/p>\n

Westbridge precinct was scheduled for a confidential audit in six days.<\/p>\n

Only senior leadership knew.<\/p>\n

I looked beyond the front desk.<\/p>\n

My mother sat handcuffed to a metal bench. Her cardigan was torn, one side of her face was swollen, and she held one arm close to her body.<\/p>\n

Across the room, Dana wore a tiny bandage and cried dramatically against my brother Michael\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n

Michael refused to meet my eyes.<\/p>\n

I knelt beside Mom.<\/p>\n

The officer swallowed.<\/p>\n

Dana stopped crying for half a second.<\/p>\n

I slowly stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemove my mother\u2019s handcuffs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The officer shifted uncomfortably.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, she is under arrest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho authorized that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Captain Robert Ross stepped out of the back office. His shirt was untucked, and irritation was already written across his face.<\/p>\n

He was Dana\u2019s uncle.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a private family disagreement,\u201d he said. \u201cDo not use your position to pressure my officers.\u201d<\/p>\n

I gave him a cold smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t mentioned my position.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence spread through the room.<\/p>\n

Ross suddenly realized that one of his own officers already had.<\/p>\n

Dana folded her arms.<\/p>\n

Michael finally looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvelyn, don\u2019t make this worse,\u201d he said. \u201cMom has been confused lately. We\u2019re trying to protect everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom stared at him as though his betrayal had hurt more than anything else that night.<\/p>\n

I took out my phone.<\/p>\n

I photographed her condition, the handcuffs, the station clock, the open evidence-room door, and every officer present.<\/p>\n

Then I looked around the room.<\/p>\n
