Lily had gone pale.<\/p>\n

She knew the voice.<\/p>\n

I pulled into the brightly lit parking lot of a busy pharmacy and parked near the entrance.<\/p>\n

After asking Emma to put on her headphones, I turned toward Lily.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never have to keep a secret that makes you afraid,\u201d I told her. \u201cWhatever happened, you did nothing wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

She began crying almost silently.<\/p>\n

I climbed into the back seat and held her.<\/p>\n

Eventually, she told me that Sarah had taken her to a building that looked like a medical office two days earlier.<\/p>\n

She had been given medicine and remembered waking in a white room with the bandage on her back.<\/p>\n

Her mother had told her everything had worked and that she needed to be brave.<\/p>\n
