I looked at the infant resting in the carrier.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s his name?\u201d I asked softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cMateo.\u201d She gazed lovingly at him. \u201cI keep telling him I\u2019m going to do better. Every night.\u201d<\/p>\n

She wiped her cheek with her wrist. \u201cWhy me?\u201d<\/p>\n

She reached for my hand and squeezed it firmly.<\/p>\n
