What started as a public betrayal quickly revealed something far worse: Michael had been funding an entirely different life with money he claimed we did not have.<\/p>\n

His confidence disappeared before the fireworks even began.<\/p>\n

One moment, he was standing in our backyard with his arm wrapped around a younger woman, looking as though he had just won some private victory.<\/p>\n

Spencer had lost his place at summer camp.<\/p>\n

Anthony could no longer attend swimming lessons.<\/p>\n

Sasha had been waiting weeks for a new pair of shoes.<\/p>\n

I had postponed a dental procedure twice because Michael said we could not afford it.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople will arrive soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know how to manage my own time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he walked outside and slammed the back door.<\/p>\n

I folded the grocery receipt and placed it inside the kitchen drawer beside the estimate from my dentist.<\/p>\n

Then I carried the burgers into the backyard.<\/p>\n

Spencer had lined up the soda cans in perfectly straight rows.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes this look right, Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looks great.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anthony grabbed another slice of watermelon and ran away laughing when I caught him.<\/p>\n
