More than two hundred mourners stood silently around my daughter\u2019s grave.<\/p>\n

Arthur had no idea that his three daughters had already hidden their mother\u2019s notebook, an old phone, and a final envelope that would one day bring his carefully planned new life crashing down.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf no one agrees to take the girls, I\u2019ll contact social services on Monday,\u201d my son-in-law said beside Rose\u2019s coffin. \u201cI\u2019m not giving up my future to raise children whose mother is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

He did not whisper.<\/p>\n

He did not sound heartbroken.<\/p>\n

He spoke loudly enough for every relative standing in the Savannah cemetery to hear him.<\/p>\n

Rose had been buried less than an hour earlier.<\/p>\n

She was only thirty-five.<\/p>\n

And while the scent of white lilies still hung in the damp air, her husband was already discussing their daughters as though they were unwanted belongings he needed to remove from his life.<\/p>\n

My chest tightened.<\/p>\n

Twelve-year-old Lucy held her mother\u2019s framed photograph against her body.<\/p>\n

Nine-year-old Rachel stared at the freshly covered grave without speaking.<\/p>\n

Six-year-old April pressed herself into my coat, trembling as she held my hand.<\/p>\n

Arthur looked untouched by the entire day.<\/p>\n

His gray suit was perfectly pressed. His expensive shoes were clean despite the muddy ground. A luxury watch showed beneath his sleeve.<\/p>\n

Then his phone vibrated.<\/p>\n

He checked the screen, and a faint smile appeared on his face.<\/p>\n

They knew something.<\/p>\n

I knelt in front of them.<\/p>\n

Arthur gave a short laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerfect. Problem solved.\u201d<\/p>\n

He did not hug them.<\/p>\n

He did not ask whether they had clothes, medicine, or anything else they needed.<\/p>\n

He simply walked toward a white van parked outside the cemetery gates.<\/p>\n

A young woman wearing oversized sunglasses waited inside.<\/p>\n

She smiled when he approached.<\/p>\n

Arthur climbed in beside her, and the van drove away without him looking back once.<\/p>\n

That evening, my home felt unbearably quiet.<\/p>\n

I warmed soup, sliced bread, and prepared the bedroom where Rose used to sleep whenever she visited.<\/p>\n

Rachel fell asleep wearing one of her mother\u2019s old blouses.<\/p>\n

April held my hand until exhaustion finally overcame her.<\/p>\n

Only Lucy remained awake.<\/p>\n

She sat beside the living-room window for hours, staring into the darkness.<\/p>\n

Shortly after three in the morning, I heard soft footsteps in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

Lucy appeared holding a small purple cloth bag against her chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandpa,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

I placed my untouched coffee aside.<\/p>\n
