I stared at Brett.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is she doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n

He reached for the keys.<\/p>\n

I moved backward.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnswer me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside, the wind changed direction. Smoke pressed against the glass. Somewhere farther down the road, a car horn began blaring and did not stop.<\/p>\n

\u201cNatalie,\u201d Brett said in that measured voice he always used when he wanted me to believe I was being unreasonable. \u201cThis is not the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right,\u201d I said. \u201cIt\u2019s time to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward the entrance.<\/p>\n

Brett caught my wrist.<\/p>\n

Not hard enough to leave a mark. Only hard enough to remind me that he was stronger, quicker, and no longer interested in listening.<\/p>\n

Then he pulled the keys from my hand.<\/p>\n

My throat tightened.<\/p>\n

Tessa followed Eleanor outside in silence.<\/p>\n

I rushed after them, still wearing house slippers, my cardigan hanging open in the hot wind filled with smoke.<\/p>\n

The SUV\u2019s engine was already running.<\/p>\n

Eleanor climbed into the passenger seat.<\/p>\n

Tessa got into the back.<\/p>\n
