PART 1 \u2014 THE BEACH TRIP I NEVER WANTED TO TAKE<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Eight months after giving birth, I still barely recognized the woman staring back at me in the mirror.<\/p>\n

My body had changed in ways I had not expected. My clothes fit differently, my confidence had disappeared, and the thought of spending an entire week wearing swimsuits around my husband\u2019s family filled me with dread.<\/p>\n

Her smile remained pleasant, but her voice sharpened.<\/p>\n

I stood frozen.<\/p>\n

\u201cDinner is at seven,\u201d she added cheerfully. \u201cDon\u2019t be late.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she walked away as though she had said nothing cruel.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, Dylan entered the room, whistling.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe just criticized my body while standing in our bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

I waited for him to say more.<\/p>\n

He did not.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s just Mom,\u201d he added, grabbing his swimming trunks.<\/p>\n

He left the room without noticing how much his words hurt.<\/p>\n

I stared at the dress hanging inside the closet.<\/p>\n

Diane\u2019s comments were painful, but Dylan\u2019s refusal to defend me felt worse.<\/p>\n

The following morning, the house smelled of coffee, toast, and ocean air.<\/p>\n
