That evening, Diane found me in the kitchen washing bottles.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel better than I have all week.\u201d<\/p>\n

She did not know how to respond when they no longer worked.<\/p>\n

Downstairs, everyone was collecting sandals, hats, and sunscreen for the family picture.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s Mom?\u201d Dylan\u2019s sister asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cPreparing to make an entrance,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

Dylan\u2019s brother-in-law laughed.<\/p>\n

I stopped walking.<\/p>\n

Behind me, I heard the confident sound of Diane\u2019s heels moving through the hallway.<\/p>\n

She emerged from the house with the satisfied expression of someone expecting applause.<\/p>\n

Then I saw what she was wearing.<\/p>\n

My dress.<\/p>\n

The same designer dress she had mocked.<\/p>\n

The dress I had bought so I could feel beautiful again.<\/p>\n

Diane walked onto the sand and smoothed the fabric over her body.<\/p>\n
