The store stood on a quiet street outside Fort Mason, Virginia, wedged between a dry cleaner and a closed barber shop. The air inside carried the scent of pressed wool, brass polish, and aged cedar hangers. Rows of dress blues hung in flawless alignment, as though the uniforms themselves were awaiting inspection.<\/p>\n

\u201cColonel Mercer,\u201d called the owner, retired Army Sergeant Frank Dobbins. \u201cRight on time.\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled, trying not to dwell on tomorrow\u2019s ceremony, the disastrous seating plan, or the fact that my fianc\u00e9, Captain Daniel Whitaker, had been unusually distant all week.<\/p>\n

Frank adjusted the bottom of my jacket while I faced the mirror. The silver eagle insignia caught the light. I was forty-two, a battalion commander, and I had entered war rooms with steadier hands than I had that morning.<\/p>\n

Then Frank went still.<\/p>\n

His gaze shifted toward the front window.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

He did not answer. Moving surprisingly fast for a man with a damaged knee, he seized my sleeve and pulled me toward the fitting room in back.<\/p>\n

My breath stopped.<\/p>\n

Frank positioned himself between me and the curtain, his face drained of color.<\/p>\n

A second man laughed. I recognized him as well\u2014Lieutenant Evan Price, Daniel\u2019s best man.<\/p>\n

Daniel continued in a casual, cutting tone. \u201cBecause once Colonel Emily Mercer walks down that aisle, the transfer is sealed. Her name gets tied to mine, her clearance opens doors, and by Monday, those procurement files disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cold spread through my fingers.<\/p>\n

Evan asked, \u201cYou\u2019re sure she doesn\u2019t suspect?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily?\u201d Daniel chuckled. \u201cShe thinks discipline is the same thing as loyalty. Give her a folded flag, a clean uniform, and a man who says \u2018honor\u2019 enough times, and she\u2019ll believe anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

I moved toward the curtain, but Frank caught my wrist.<\/p>\n

Daniel lowered his voice. \u201cAfter the honeymoon, I\u2019ll push the instability angle. Stress. Command pressure. Maybe grief over her father. The board will listen if her own husband says she\u2019s compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evan whistled. \u201cAnd the defense contractor?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlready wired the first half. Second half after she\u2019s removed and I get access.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman reflected in the fitting-room mirror suddenly looked unfamiliar\u2014still decorated, still wearing her uniform, but no longer a bride.<\/p>\n

Frank whispered, \u201cI recorded everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside, Daniel said, \u201cNow where\u2019s my damn wedding cuff links?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Frank, then met my own steady gaze in the mirror.<\/p>\n
