Ryan climbed out first, carrying a cup of coffee in one hand and my spare key in the other.<\/p>\n

The key did not work.<\/p>\n

He tried again, using more force.<\/p>\n

Behind him, Megan stepped down holding a clipboard and immediately began directing the movers toward my porch. Their children remained in the backseat while my father\u2019s car pulled in behind them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d Ryan shouted.<\/p>\n

I opened the door from inside, calm and well-rested, wearing the robe I had purchased for my first peaceful morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad\u2019s expression darkened. \u201cClaire, open the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the officers moved forward. \u201cSir, this property is privately owned. You do not have permission to enter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan held up the key. \u201cShe gave this to our dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cDad took that key from my old apartment drawer when I was packing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

Megan\u2019s smile vanished. \u201cWe sold our lease because you said this was settled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan turned sharply toward her. \u201cIt is settled.\u201d<\/p>\n

I raised my phone. \u201cThen explain why you texted three movers that the owner was unstable and had agreed to leave by morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

The officer looked directly at Ryan.<\/p>\n

His face turned red.<\/p>\n

Then my attorney, Marisol Grant, stepped out of the sheriff\u2019s vehicle. She had always enjoyed arriving exactly on time for a disaster.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Bennett,\u201d she said to my father, \u201cClaire has filed a report for attempted unlawful entry, harassment, and suspected document fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad gave a dismissive laugh. \u201cDocument fraud?\u201d<\/p>\n

Marisol opened the folder in her hands. \u201cThe rental agreement your son emailed to the moving company lists you as landlord. You signed it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Megan gasped. \u201cRyan?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan looked at Dad.<\/p>\n

Dad lowered his eyes toward the driveway.<\/p>\n

That was when the full plan became clear.<\/p>\n

Ryan had not simply intended to occupy my house.<\/p>\n

He had created a false arrangement claiming that I rented my own lake house to him for one dollar each month, with Dad pretending to be the landlord.<\/p>\n

Marisol handed my father one last document.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd there is one more problem,\u201d she said. \u201cClaire is not the only person you tried this with.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every trace of color left Dad\u2019s face.<\/p>\n
