That appeared to affect Miranda more than anything else.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I remembered Daisy crying beside the pool.<\/p>\n

I remembered her saying that everything was her fault.<\/p>\n

Then I said the only response that seemed worthwhile.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe person who most needs your apology is not me,\u201d I said. \u201cIt is Daisy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later that week, Paul emailed me. He asked whether it would be acceptable for him to bring Evan over and leave something for Daisy. I agreed.<\/p>\n

Daisy was working on a puzzle at the kitchen table when they arrived.<\/p>\n

The moment she saw them standing outside, her entire body became still.<\/p>\n

Then Miranda lifted a folded yellow beach towel. It was plain except for a white daisy stitched into one corner.<\/p>\n

She entered only after I stepped out of the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaisy,\u201d she said, \u201cI was wrong. Your day should have stayed happy. I am sorry I helped ruin part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daisy hugged the towel against her chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was supposed to be my normal day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d Miranda said. \u201cAnd I am sorry I made it about me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daisy glanced at the towel.<\/p>\n

Then she looked at me.<\/p>\n

Then back at Miranda.<\/p>\n

She accepted the towel because she was polite.<\/p>\n

She did not hug Miranda.<\/p>\n

I was relieved she did not.<\/p>\n

Evan shifted awkwardly and suddenly said, \u201cI told Mom teachers can swim, because they can.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed before I could stop myself.<\/p>\n

Daisy gave him a small smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was smart,\u201d she told him.<\/p>\n

His face immediately brightened.<\/p>\n

After they went home, Daisy spread the towel across her bed and carefully flattened each corner.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo I have to forgive her?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, darling.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next week at school, Evan raised his hand during reading group before I had called on anyone.<\/p>\n

Then he stood, held the book in both hands, and read an entire page without once hiding his face behind it.<\/p>\n

He struggled with one word, corrected himself, and continued.<\/p>\n

When he finished, the class applauded, and he smiled proudly. It still amazed me how naturally children carried kindness inside them.<\/p>\n

As everyone lined up for lunch, he placed a folded note on my desk.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s from my dad,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

Thank you for teaching him courage. He taught us some too.<\/p>\n

I placed the note in the top drawer of my desk as a reminder that people were rarely simple.<\/p>\n
