Marcus had arrived ten minutes earlier.<\/p>\n

I knew none of that yet. I only knew my father had abandoned me in the kitchen with the front door hanging open, and my body no longer seemed under my control. My lungs could not draw enough air. Every passing second felt dangerous.<\/p>\n

I slid down the cabinet, my nightgown soaked, one hand pressed tightly against the side of my stomach.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease,\u201d I whispered, unsure whether I was speaking to God, my baby, or myself. \u201cPlease, baby, stay with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside, Richard yelled, \u201cMove your car!\u201d<\/p>\n

Marcus never raised his voice. That restraint was exactly what frightened people. He had worked in law enforcement for twenty-two years\u2014first as a state trooper, then an investigator, and now a captain with the Ohio State Highway Patrol. When facts were enough, he never wasted words.<\/p>\n

\u201cRichard Hale,\u201d he said, \u201cstep away from the vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have no right to stop me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have every right if you just assaulted a pregnant woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

The silence afterward felt narrow and sharp.<\/p>\n

My phone rested on the kitchen counter, only a little beyond my reach. I tried to lift myself, but another contraction seized me, forcing a scream from my throat.<\/p>\n

Marcus heard it.<\/p>\n

His tone changed immediately. \u201cEmily!\u201d<\/p>\n

Heavy footsteps raced toward the porch.<\/p>\n

My father attempted to push around him. \u201cShe\u2019s fine. She\u2019s dramatic. She always does this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I heard Richard\u2019s body strike the hood of the cruiser.<\/p>\n

\u201cHands where I can see them,\u201d Marcus ordered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a suspect.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words reached through the pain like the first full breath I had taken.<\/p>\n

Not a father who had lost his temper.<\/p>\n

Not someone entitled to forgiveness because we shared blood.<\/p>\n

Marcus entered the kitchen moments later while speaking to dispatch. His gaze took in everything\u2014the wet floor, my shaking body against the cabinet, my hand over my belly, and the red mark already forming where I had hit the granite.<\/p>\n

He dropped beside me but carefully avoided moving my body.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily, stay still. Ambulance is on the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy baby,\u201d I gasped.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know. Help is coming.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDaniel\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI called him from the driveway. He\u2019s already trying to get the first flight back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears blurred my vision. \u201cWhy were you here?\u201d<\/p>\n

Marcus glanced toward the open door, beyond which my father continued shouting curses.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaniel asked me to check on you. Your father called him this morning demanding the money. Daniel told him no. Then Richard said he\u2019d get it from you directly.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened again, and pain burned upward through my body.<\/p>\n

Marcus removed his uniform jacket and gently positioned it beneath my head.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not alone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Sirens approached in the distance.<\/p>\n

Outside, my father screamed that Marcus was destroying his life, that I was lying, and that no one would believe a daughter\u2019s word over her father\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Marcus turned slightly, his face cold.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe security cameras will,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Richard fell silent.<\/p>\n

He had forgotten the cameras Daniel installed after his previous visit.<\/p>\n

He had forgotten the doorbell camera.<\/p>\n

The driveway camera.<\/p>\n

The kitchen camera Daniel had placed near the back entrance after several neighborhood burglaries.<\/p>\n
