But beneath the bench at the end of our bed lay a champagne-colored lace camisole with a tiny blue charm attached to one strap.<\/p>\n

I had seen it before.<\/p>\n

Claire had shown it to me after her engagement dinner, laughing as she held it against her body.<\/p>\n

\u201cOwen paid a ridiculous amount for this,\u201d she had said. \u201cI\u2019m saving it for our honeymoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Claire had been my closest friend for twelve years.<\/p>\n

She was also hiding behind my maternity coats.<\/p>\n

The closet door stood open less than an inch, but that was enough. I saw a hand clutching the sleeve of my cream coat. I recognized the diamond Owen had placed on Claire\u2019s finger. I smelled the perfume she had worn to our baby shower planning lunch two days earlier.<\/p>\n

Neither of them realized I had seen her.<\/p>\n

Damon moved between me and the closet.<\/p>\n

I stared at him with his belt still undone, his hair disheveled, and the bedsheet dragged halfway off the mattress.<\/p>\n

Then I looked at the ultrasound image in my hand.<\/p>\n

Our daughter had turned toward the monitor that morning. For the first time, I had been able to see the shape of her nose.<\/p>\n

Damon had claimed he was too busy to attend.<\/p>\n

Now I understood what had kept him home.<\/p>\n

Behind the maternity coats, Claire remained perfectly still.<\/p>\n

My voice trembled, but Damon smiled as though he assumed I was overwhelmed by the appointment.<\/p>\n

I moved one step closer to the closet.<\/p>\n

Every instinct in me wanted to yank the door open.<\/p>\n

I wanted Claire to face me. I wanted Damon to explain why my best friend\u2019s lingerie was lying under our bed while I had attended a prenatal appointment alone.<\/p>\n

Then I noticed Damon\u2019s phone on the mattress.<\/p>\n

Claire had hers with her inside the closet.<\/p>\n

If I confronted them now, they would erase their messages, call everything a misunderstanding, and coordinate their version of events before I could even contact Owen.<\/p>\n

My only advantage was that they believed I knew nothing.<\/p>\n

I rested one hand over my stomach.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel light-headed,\u201d I said. \u201cCould you get me some water?\u201d<\/p>\n

Relief passed across Damon\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned toward the bathroom.<\/p>\n

Keeping my phone beside my hip, I quietly took one photograph.<\/p>\n

The camisole was visible beneath the bench. Damon\u2019s shirt lay crumpled next to it. The corner of our disturbed bed appeared in the background.<\/p>\n

I touched nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to sit in the nursery,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a good idea,\u201d Damon replied too quickly.<\/p>\n

I left without glancing toward the closet again.<\/p>\n

Inside the nursery, I lowered myself into the chair beside the unfinished crib. My hands shook so badly that the ultrasound photo kept tapping against the wooden armrest.<\/p>\n

A minute later, I heard the bedroom door close.<\/p>\n

Quiet footsteps crossed the hallway.<\/p>\n

Then the side door opened and shut.<\/p>\n

When I went back upstairs, the camisole had disappeared. The bed had been straightened, and Damon\u2019s shirt was no longer on the floor.<\/p>\n

He was downstairs running water in the kitchen as though nothing had happened.<\/p>\n

They believed they had removed every piece of evidence.<\/p>\n

They knew nothing about the photograph.<\/p>\n

They assumed my silence meant they were safe.<\/p>\n

I locked the nursery door and opened the security application on my phone.<\/p>\n

Claire had an emergency entry code. I had given it to her because I trusted her enough to enter my home whenever I might need help.<\/p>\n

The access history appeared.<\/p>\n

Her code had unlocked my front door six times over the previous three months.<\/p>\n

Every visit matched a prenatal appointment Damon had insisted I attend alone.<\/p>\n
