Benjamin was the contractor Marianne had mentioned for months. Her kitchen was dated, but old cabinets were not an emergency.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t ask me,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew you\u2019d say no.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we saved for a year.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a trip.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t just a trip to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sighed as if I were deliberately making everything difficult.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom gave me life, Donna. I owe her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m your wife,\u201d I said. \u201cI thought being your wife meant I was your family too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t twist my words.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not. I\u2019m listening to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression hardened.<\/p>\n

\u201cFamily comes first. You\u2019re being selfish.\u201d<\/p>\n

After three years of abandoning dinners early because Marianne had another minor crisis, after spending my birthday weekend repainting her spare bedroom, and after hearing, \u201cYou know how Mom gets,\u201d so frequently that it sounded like part of our marriage vows, I still did not shout.<\/p>\n

I did not throw the suitcase.<\/p>\n

I asked only, \u201cDid you tell your mother I agreed to this?\u201d<\/p>\n

David looked away.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not important.\u201d<\/p>\n

It mattered more than he realized.<\/p>\n

A minute later, he left the room while muttering that I needed to unpack.<\/p>\n

I remained still until my hands stopped trembling. Then I reached into the suitcase, removed the small box, and hid it deep in the closet behind a pile of sweaters.<\/p>\n

I closed the suitcase.<\/p>\n

Then I opened my laptop.<\/p>\n

There was damage to calculate.<\/p>\n

The cancellation notices were worse than I expected. The hotel refunded only part of the booking, while the airline offered credits after deducting fees. Some of our savings were permanently gone.<\/p>\n

Then I checked the joint account.<\/p>\n

The payment to Benjamin appeared clearly.<\/p>\n

It was only the first deposit, nowhere near enough to complete the renovation.<\/p>\n

But it was enough to begin destroying the existing kitchen.<\/p>\n

The following morning, I went grocery shopping because life still demanded milk and eggs even when a marriage was splitting apart.<\/p>\n
