I stared at him.<\/p>\n

Part of me still remembered the child who once slept with a stuffed dinosaur tucked beneath his chin.<\/p>\n

But the young man standing before me was not helpless.<\/p>\n

He was brilliant, disciplined and far more prepared than either Christopher or Brenda had imagined.<\/p>\n

Luke opened another folder.<\/p>\n

Inside were photographs of me entering restaurants, meeting clients and leaving office buildings. Each had been taken from misleading angles, making ordinary business interactions appear secretive or romantic.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrenda sent these to Dad,\u201d he explained. \u201cHe chose to believe them because they gave him an excuse for his own behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

Raymond Davis had once been my father\u2019s most gifted student.<\/p>\n

Even three years after his death, my father was still standing between me and the people who wanted to erase me.<\/p>\n

Luke watched me quietly.<\/p>\n

I thought of Brenda in my gown.<\/p>\n

When I looked into the mirror, I no longer saw Christopher Albright\u2019s humiliated wife.<\/p>\n

I saw Lawrence Mendoza\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n

Before leaving, Luke instructed Mrs. Higgins to place the cup and remaining broth in a sealed bag.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not wash anything,\u201d he said. \u201cIt may be important evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Our driver waited outside.<\/p>\n

During the journey, Luke made several calls.<\/p>\n

He ordered a backup livestream to be activated. He confirmed the legal documents with Mr. Davis. Then he spoke to Mr. Garrison, one of Grand Horizon\u2019s most influential investors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn twenty minutes,\u201d Luke said, \u201cyou will understand why my mother was absent tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

When he ended the call, I studied him.<\/p>\n

He squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been arranging this chessboard for two years. Tonight, the game ends.\u201d<\/p>\n

I watched him walk toward the hotel entrance while I carried my father\u2019s agreement into the service elevator.<\/p>\n

Mr. Davis was waiting when the doors opened.<\/p>\n

His expression softened when he saw me.<\/p>\n
