His fever had climbed past 104. He had thrown up twice in the car. Then, two blocks from the hospital, his body went rigid in her arms.<\/p>\n

Behind her, Daniel, her husband, came through the doors holding another child.<\/p>\n

Another nurse hurried over, but the first intake slot, the first doctor, and the first available room went to Lily because Daniel had already filled out the paperwork and handed over insurance information from Vanessa\u2019s file.<\/p>\n

Claire screamed until security stepped closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake my son!\u201d she begged. \u201cSomebody take my son!\u201d<\/p>\n

By the time a resident finally lifted Noah onto a gurney, his lips were already turning faintly blue. Claire ran beside him down the hallway, barefoot after one sandal slipped off near the entrance.<\/p>\n

Doctors spoke quickly around her.<\/p>\n

Possible meningitis.<\/p>\n

Prolonged seizure.<\/p>\n

Respiratory compromise.<\/p>\n

Prepare intubation.<\/p>\n

Daniel showed up in the doorway twenty minutes later, but Claire refused to look at him. His shirt carried the scent of Vanessa\u2019s perfume.<\/p>\n

At 3:09 a.m., a monitor shrieked.<\/p>\n

At 3:22 a.m., Noah was moved to the pediatric ICU.<\/p>\n

At sunrise, Dr. Elena Marsh stood beside Claire in a quiet consultation room and said the sentence that tore her life in half.<\/p>\n

\u201cNoah suffered severe oxygen deprivation during the seizure. We\u2019re doing everything possible, but the delay mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next day, Daniel came running back, shaking and desperate, begging to see his son and ask forgiveness.<\/p>\n
