Dad was the first to notice.<\/p>\n

\u201cMartin?\u201d he said. \u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

The accountant glanced at me before checking the screen once more. \u201cThe operating account access has been suspended.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vivian gave an uneasy laugh. \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means,\u201d I said, \u201cmy personal guarantee is officially withdrawn.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad shot to his feet so quickly that his chair slammed into the wall. \u201cYou can\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI already did.\u201d<\/p>\n

The warmth drained from the room.<\/p>\n

Martin cleared his throat. \u201cEdward, without her guarantee, the bank can call the review immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom stared at him. \u201cWhat review?\u201d<\/p>\n

I faced her. \u201cThe one keeping Dad\u2019s company alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

For three years, my salary, my condo, my credit history, and my private contracts had kept the company standing. It had not survived because of Vivian\u2019s charm, Dad\u2019s reputation, or Mom\u2019s elegant dinner parties.<\/p>\n

It survived because of me.<\/p>\n

Dad jabbed a finger in my direction. \u201cYou ungrateful little\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCareful,\u201d I said softly. \u201cThere are guests.\u201d<\/p>\n

His mouth snapped shut.<\/p>\n

I set a folder on the table. Inside were copies of loan documents, transfer statements, emails in which Dad begged me to \u201csave the family name,\u201d and messages from Mom promising I would finally receive respect once the company recovered. There were also invoices showing that Vivian had used business funds for clothes, vacations, and engagement photographs.<\/p>\n

Her fianc\u00e9 slowly brought his glass down.<\/p>\n

Vivian\u2019s cheeks reddened. \u201cThose were approved.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBy Dad,\u201d I said. \u201cUsing a company account under bank supervision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martin murmured, \u201cEdward\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The anger on Dad\u2019s face turned into alarm.<\/p>\n

Then his phone began ringing.<\/p>\n

It was the bank.<\/p>\n

He stared at the caller identification as though a verdict had appeared on the screen.<\/p>\n

Mom seized my wrist. \u201cUndo this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked down at her hand until she released me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou said my only value was the money I bring home,\u201d I said. \u201cSo I took my value home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad accidentally answered the call on speaker.<\/p>\n

A woman\u2019s voice echoed across the dining room.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Callahan, we received Ms. Callahan\u2019s notice. Effective immediately, all pending credit extensions are frozen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vivian\u2019s voice dropped to a whisper. \u201cBut my wedding deposit\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The banker continued, \u201cAnd there is a second matter. We need to discuss possible misuse of restricted business funds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad turned toward Vivian.<\/p>\n

Vivian lowered her gaze to the floor.<\/p>\n
