Dad ended the call with shaking fingers. Vivian\u2019s fianc\u00e9 shifted away from her as though the truth carried an odor. Mom\u2019s gaze moved repeatedly between the folder and me, searching for the obedient daughter she still believed she could control.<\/p>\n

\u201cClara,\u201d Dad said, his voice abruptly gentle, \u201cwe are family.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n

His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n
