Her eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved her as much as ever, but love wasn\u2019t enough to preserve every little detail.\u201d<\/p>\n

The kitchen became completely silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe summer after she died, I started writing down one ordinary memory every time we visited this beach,\u201d Cheryl continued.<\/p>\n

She touched the glass bottle.<\/p>\n

I opened another scroll.<\/p>\n

*Nathan cried because he found a crab with only one claw.*<\/p>\n

I remembered the crab, but I had forgotten Nathan\u2019s reaction.<\/p>\n

Another note said:<\/p>\n

*Your mommy always takes broken shells home because she believes someone should still love them.*<\/p>\n

I stared at the words.<\/p>\n

Every summer, I placed chipped seashells on the windowsill.<\/p>\n

I had never understood why I always chose the damaged ones.<\/p>\n

One by one, the papers revealed a version of our family I had not realized Cheryl had been preserving.<\/p>\n

*Grandpa pretends he enjoys kale because Nathan says superheroes eat green food.*<\/p>\n

*Daddy checks underneath your beach chair before sitting because he worries about pinching your fingers.*<\/p>\n

*Nathan falls asleep more quickly when someone rubs circles on his back instead of patting him.*<\/p>\n

None of these memories were extraordinary.<\/p>\n

That was exactly why they affected me so deeply.<\/p>\n

They were the moments quietly disappearing while I rushed through laundry, grocery shopping, permission slips, appointments, and plans for tomorrow.<\/p>\n

My eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen did you begin asking Nathan that question?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat question?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery Wednesday, you ask him, \u2018What happened today that you would never want tomorrow to forget?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Recognition softened Cheryl\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought you were simply making conversation,\u201d I continued.<\/p>\n

She smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was teaching him to notice.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words struck me deeply.<\/p>\n

Children were taught to read, ride bicycles, count money, and tie their shoes.<\/p>\n

Cheryl had been teaching my son something I had never known could be taught.<\/p>\n

How to pay attention before ordinary moments disappeared.<\/p>\n

I carefully returned the notes to the bottle.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why did you tell him not to tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Cheryl gave me a guilty smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to give it to you as a surprise someday.\u201d<\/p>\n

She glanced toward Nathan\u2019s bedroom.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, your son has never successfully kept a present secret.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot birthdays,\u201d Will said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr Christmas,\u201d I added.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr the puppy,\u201d Cheryl admitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I told him that Mommy couldn\u2019t know yet. Nathan apparently translated \u2018surprise\u2019 into \u2018secret.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time since the changing cubicle, I laughed.<\/p>\n

It was exhausted and tearful, but real.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course he did.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning, everyone began packing to leave.<\/p>\n

Coolers were emptied. Windows were checked. Children searched under furniture for missing flip-flops.<\/p>\n

After hugging his cousins goodbye, Nathan suddenly ran toward the porch.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy bottle!\u201d<\/p>\n

I instinctively started after him.<\/p>\n

Then I stopped.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t running away from me.<\/p>\n

He was running toward something important.<\/p>\n

Cheryl was already waiting on the porch.<\/p>\n

She handed Nathan a narrow blank strip of paper and the tiny pencil she always carried in her pocket.<\/p>\n

I had never noticed the pencil before.<\/p>\n

Nathan sat on the bottom step with his tongue sticking slightly from the corner of his mouth.<\/p>\n

He concentrated harder than I had ever seen him concentrate on homework.<\/p>\n

Nobody interrupted him.<\/p>\n

When he finished, he tried to roll the paper.<\/p>\n

It opened again.<\/p>\n

Then again.<\/p>\n

Cheryl gently showed him how to tuck the edge underneath.<\/p>\n

Nathan smiled proudly and placed the note inside the bottle.<\/p>\n

Cheryl didn\u2019t ask what he had written.<\/p>\n

Neither did I.<\/p>\n
