We had spent five months planning our trip to Cancun. Ellie had drawn purple palm trees on a countdown calendar, packed her own backpack, and proudly insisted on carrying her passport because she wanted to be responsible.<\/p>\n

But when the airline employee asked for it, Ellie opened the case and found nothing.<\/p>\n

Ellie had always been sensitive to unexpected touch. We had taught her that she could politely say, \u201cNo, thank you,\u201d and offer a wave instead.<\/p>\n

Carol had stolen her passport because she refused a hug.<\/p>\n

Brian ended the call.<\/p>\n
